2. Connecting to Audio Equipment

The Shure SM57 uses an XLR connector for audio output. You will need an XLR cable (not included) to connect the microphone to your audio interface, mixer, or amplifier.

  1. Connect one end of a standard XLR cable to the XLR output port at the base of the SM57 microphone.
  2. Connect the other end of the XLR cable to an available XLR input on your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier. Ensure the input is designed for microphone-level signals.
  3. Ako se povezujete na an ampspasilac, osigurajte amplifier has an XLR input or use an appropriate adapter if necessary.

3. Initial Sound Check

Before a performance or recording session, perform a sound check to ensure optimal audio levels and clarity.

  • Position the microphone appropriately for the instrument or sound source. For instruments like guitar amps, place the microphone close to the speaker cone. For drums, consider placement for snare, tom, or overhead miking.
  • Gradually increase the gain on your mixer or audio interface until a clear signal is received without clipping or distortion.
  • Adjust equalization (EQ) settings on your mixer or interface as needed to achieve the desired tone. The SM57 has a contoured frequency response that naturally enhances instrument presence.

Microphone Placement Techniques

The SM57's cardioid polar pattern is effective at isolating the main sound source and rejecting off-axis sound. Proper placement is crucial for achieving the best results.

  • Instrument Amplifieri: For guitar or bass amplifiers, position the microphone 1-6 inches from the speaker grille. Experiment with placement closer to the center of the cone for a brighter sound, or towards the edge for a warmer tone.
  • Drums and Percussion: The SM57 is excellent for snare drums, toms, and even as an overhead mic. For snare, aim the mic at the center of the drum head, a few inches above the rim. For toms, place it near the rim, angled towards the center.
  • Akustični instrumenti: For acoustic guitars or other stringed instruments, aim the microphone towards the soundhole or bridge, experimenting with distance to control proximity effect and overall warmth.
  • Vocals (Live): While primarily an instrument mic, the SM57 can be used for vocals in live settings, especially when a rugged, feedback-resistant microphone is needed. Users should sing directly into the top of the grille for optimal pickup.

Dobijte Staging and Feedback Prevention

  • Podešavanje pojačanja: Set the input gain on your mixer or interface to the lowest possible level that still provides a strong, clear signal. This maximizes headroom and minimizes noise.
  • Položaj monitora: When using the SM57 in a live setting, position stage monitors behind the microphone to avoid feedback. The cardioid pattern is least sensitive at the rear.
  • Efekat blizine: The SM57 exhibits proximity effect, meaning bass response increases as the microphone is moved closer to the sound source. Use this to your advantage for added warmth, or increase distance to reduce excessive bass.

Održavanje i njega

The Shure SM57 is built for durability, but proper care will extend its lifespan and maintain its performance.

  • čišćenje: Wipe the microphone body with a soft, dry cloth. For the grille, a soft brush can be used to remove dust or debris. Avoid using liquid cleaners directly on the grille or capsule.
  • Skladištenje: When not in use, store the SM57 in its provided storage bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Rukovanje: While rugged, avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to excessive force, as this can damage internal components.
  • Uslovi okoline: Keep the microphone away from extreme temperatures, high humidity, and corrosive substances.

Rješavanje problema

ProblemMogući uzrokRješenje
Nema izlaza zvuka
  • Neispravan priključak kabla
  • Neispravan XLR kabel
  • Pojačanje ulaza miksera/interfejsa prenisko
  • Phantom power accidentally engaged (SM57 is dynamic, does not require it)
  • Ensure XLR cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Testirajte s drugim XLR kablom.
  • Postepeno povećavajte ulazno pojačanje.
  • Disable phantom power on the input channel.
Distorted Sound
  • Ulazno pojačanje previsoko (osekavanje)
  • Mikrofon je preblizu izvoru zvuka (efekat blizine)
  • Smanjite ulazno pojačanje na mikseru/interfejsu.
  • Povećajte udaljenost između mikrofona i izvora zvuka.
Pretjerane povratne informacije
  • Microphone pointed towards speakers/monitors
  • Dobitak previsok
  • Akustika prostorija
  • Pomaknite mikrofon dalje od zvučnika.
  • Smanjite ulazno pojačanje ili glavnu jačinu zvuka.
  • Use an equalizer to cut problematic frequencies.
